Earlier last month, a 22-year-old psychiatric patient stabbed an elderly man three times after tempers flared over the alleged overcrowding of the emergency department at Selayang Hospital in Selangor

The 22-year-old was yesterday, 28 February, charged with voluntarily causing grievous hurt by dangerous weapons under Section 326 of the Penal Code, reported Berita Harian.

The charge carries 20 years imprisonment, a fine, or strokes of rotan, upon conviction.

The man, who was present before judge Nor Rajiah Mat Zin, told the court that he was hallucinating during the incident and heard voices

When asked by the interpreter whether he understood the charges or not, the man, who was unrepresented, claimed to be hallucinating during the incident around 3.45pm on 14 February.

"I was hallucinating and hearing whispers," he told the court while pleading for his own release to be treated at his sister's house in Batu Caves, reported the Bahasa Melayu daily.

However, deputy public prosecutor (DPP) Wan Nur Iman Wan Ahmad Afzal requested for the accused to undergo a psychiatric evaluation after taking into account his unstable mental state.

Judge Nor Rajiah ordered the man to undergo a psychiatric examination at Bahagia Tanjung Rambutan Hospital in Ulu Kinta, Perak, and also fixed 29 March for re-mention of the case.
