JPJ To Upgrade AWAS Cameras With New Tech Featuring Automatic Number Plate Recognition

In a statement today, 8 August, JPJ director-general Aedy Fadly Ramli said the upgrade, which will be carried out in stages, is in line with the latest advancements in ANPR technology to ensure better operation.

"The replacement involves the Redflex model cameras, which need to be changed due to major damage and the lack of support from the manufacturer," Aedy said.

JPJ stated that AWAS cameras are installed to monitor and enforce speed limit violations and traffic light infractions, as outlined in the Road Transport Act 1987. This initiative aligns with the department's efforts to reduce the number of road accidents and fatalities.

As such, Aedy urged road users to comply with the law for their safety as well as the safety of other road users.

These updated cameras are significantly smaller than the previous version, as they no longer need a metal casing.

Instead, they are seamlessly integrated into a sleek black pole with built-in flashlights.

According to automotive journalist Keshy Dhillon, the new cameras have 360-degree surveillance capability, which can be used to detect traffic light and illegal U-turn offences.

"The worst thing for speed demons is that they look like regular black poles that don't serve any purpose," Keshy noted in an Instagram post published on Tuesday, 6 August.
