The incident occurred along the Butterworth Outer Ring Road in Penang on Sunday, 4 August.
More than 300 motorcyclists were seen riding against the flow of traffic during a police operation to apprehend mat rempit in Penang on Sunday, 4 August
According to the New Straits Times, the motorcyclists committed the dangerous act to avoid traffic checks along the Butterworth Outer Ring Road at 7pm.
North Seberang Perai district police chief ACP Anuar Abdul Rahman said the incident occurred during the Samseng Jalanan Operation conducted by police officers in the district.
"In the operation, the police nabbed a motorcyclist under Section 42(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for riding recklessly and dangerously.
"Police also seized 25 motorcycles for various offences," he said in a statement yesterday, 7 August.
A video of the incident went viral earlier this week
In the 33-second video, motorcyclists are seen riding on the emergency, first, and third lanes of the expressway, endangering other road users that are driving cautiously.
Many netizens were appalled by the motorcyclists' actions, urging the police to round all of them up.
"PDRM, put all of them in lock-up," said a Facebook user.
"The police conducted a roadblock in front and they still dared to do this," said a netizen, while another added, "This [revolting] behaviour troubles others and they embarrass their parents."
