KL Sinkhole Victim's Family Performs Last Rites At The Site After Search Called Off
The family departed for India at 5pm on Sunday, 1 September.
The family of Vijaya Lakshmi, the woman who was swallowed by a sinkhole on Jalan Masjid India in Kuala Lumpur last month, has left for India after offering final prayers as per Hindu customs at the site
According to a video posted by Astro Awani, the victim's husband, son, and sister visited the sinkhole site yesterday, 1 September, where they lit oil lamps and rang bells as part of the prayer for her soul.
The family departed for Kuppam, Andhra Pradesh in India at 5pm.
The 48-year-old victim went missing after the pavement she was walking on sank and swallowed her on the morning of 23 August
Since then, a search and rescue operation (SAR) has been underway to locate the victim without success.
The SAR was called off on 31 August after the efforts were deemed too dangerous to continue, according to the Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Federal Territories) Dr Zaliha Mustafa.
"After considering all expert opinions... we have decided that we will stop search and rescue operations," Dr Zaliha said, noting that this was for the safety of both rescuers and the surrounding area.
Meanwhile, a man, who escaped falling into the same sinkhole considered it a "wake-up call" and converted to Islam three days later:
