Klang will soon become a city, joining Petaling Jaya, Shah Alam, and Subang Jaya as one of the four cities in Selangor

The announcement was made by Local Government Development Minister Nga Kor Ming yesterday, 26 July, reported New Straits Times.

He said the 133-year-old town has met all the criteria needed to attain city status.

The Cabinet made the decision on Tuesday, 25 July, after learning Klang has recorded a population of over 500,000 people, and Klang Municipal Council (MPK) has an annual income of over RM100 million from sustainable sources.

With the city status upgrade, MPK will soon transform into Klang City Council

It is understood that the federal and state governments have agreed to jointly allocate RM10 million for the development of the city council, reported Free Malaysia Today.

Separately, the Selangor government will inject a special allocation of RM5 million to Klang.

"Our ministry has also requested for a special allocation of RM24.6 million from the Ministry of Works to upgrade the roads here. This will be discussed after the state election.

"Therefore, it is important that Selangor remains aligned with the federal government," he said.

The Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, will announce the day on which Klang will formally become a city

When that happens, Klang will become Malaysia's 20th city.

Previously, Nga announced that Klang is one of nine cities recognised as royal cities.

New Straits Times reported that the other royal cities include:
– Arau in Perlis
– Anak Bukit in Kedah
– Kuala Kangsar in Perak
– Seri Menanti in Negeri Sembilan
– Muar in Johor
– Al-Muhammadi Kubang Kerian in Kelantan
– Kuala Terengganu in Terengganu
– Pekan in Pahang
