The Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry (KPDN) has determined that a popular nasi lemak restaurant is not violating any regulations by charging customers an additional RM1 per person to dine in an air-conditioned area

In response to a viral X post that criticised the restaurant in Kampung Baru, Kuala Lumpur for imposing such an unfair surcharge, the ministry made a statement yesterday, 11 November, saying that the eatery "did nothing wrong".

The ministry sent a team of inspectors to the restaurant and concluded that the prices of its food, drinks, and service charges comply with the Price Control and Anti-Profiteering Act.

"Our officers also discovered that the RM1 charge is clearly displayed at the entrance area and on the mirror of the air-conditioned room, where customers can easily see it.

"Employees will also notify customers [about the charge] who want to enter the air-conditioned room in advance," the ministry said.

KPDN officers were told that the additional charge has been in place for the past three years.

The ministry stated that the RM1 per person charge applies only to adult customers, while children under the age of 10 are not charged

"Inspection in the air-conditioned dining room found that the air-conditioning was working well and customers using the room were aware of the charges. There were no complaints on this matter," it said.

After conducting all inspections, KPDN reported that the restaurant did not commit any wrongdoing.

KPDN's investigation comes after an X post calling out the restaurant for its aircon room surcharge went viral last week, amassing over 860,000 views

"Stop bringing the culture of charging for every single thing, even for the use of the aircon," read the post.

Some netizens urged KPDN to investigate the restaurant, arguing that even mamak restaurants do not impose such a fee on their customers.

SAYS reached out to the restaurant for a comment on the reason behind the RM1 per person charge but did not receive an immediate response.
