A video showing officers from the Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry (KPDN) criticising and lecturing an owner of a sundry shop in Melaka for storing vegetables in the toilet has gone viral on TikTok

According to Bernama, the shop has been operating for over two years by a Bangladeshi man in his 40s, who is married to a local woman.

The inspection was conducted on 30 September after receiving complaints from the public.

In a four-minute video posted on TikTok yesterday, 6 October, several KPDN officers are seen inspecting the shop in Tanjung Minyak Perdana.

Officers discovered that the shop breached several laws, including poor product signage, incorrect price tags, and selling expired goods.

During the inspection of its inventory at the back of the shop, they found at least three baskets of vegetables stored in the toilet.

One officer reprimanded the owner, stating, "Isn't it your responsibility to ensure the food you sell is clean?

"Our religion teaches us to maintain cleanliness for everyone. Please store [the vegetables] in the right place. Even if space is limited, storing foods in the toilet is unacceptable," he said.

The officer explained that although the toilet was not in use, unhygienic substances could still contaminate the vegetables

"If you are the person eating [the vegetables], you would be disgusted too, right?

"What if someone bought them and fed them to their toddlers and young children? What would happen if unhygienic substances enter their bodies?" the officer asked.

KPDN Melaka director Norena Jaafar said the shop violated the Price Control and Anti-Profiteering Act 2011 and failed to comply with the Price Marking for Goods and Charges for Services Order 2020

The shop also failed to remove expired items from its shelves, including instant laksa that expired on 1 June.

Additionally, rat droppings were found beneath a refrigerator at the premises, reported the New Straits Times.

The video of KPDN Melaka inspecting the sundry shop garnered over 2.3 million views. Watch it here:
