Lion Dance Performers Fall Into Sinkhole During Chinese New Year Performance
The floor of the shop corridor where they were performing suddenly collapsed.
A group of youths performing a lion dance for a Chinese New Year celebration fell through a large hole when the floor of a shop corridor in Tamparuli, Sabah suddenly collapsed
According to the New Straits Times, the incident occurred around 11am on Wednesday, 5 February, along Jalan Bunga.
Fortunately, the three performers who fell into the nearly 1m-deep hole were quickly rescued by their teammates and escaped unharmed.
Rayner Ebi, a local resident who witnessed the incident, said the unexpected collapse shocked the crowd watching the performance.
"This incident is a clear reminder of the importance of immediate maintenance of basic infrastructure in the town by the local authorities," he said.

The witness, who is an officer at the Tuaran member of parliament's service centre, noted that the floor issue in the area had been reported as a safety hazard to the Tuaran District Council before the incident
"However, accidents are unpredictable, and unfortunately, the collapse happened right during the lion dance performance," he said.
He urged the local council to take immediate action to prevent similar incidents and advised pedestrians to exercise caution when walking around the affected area.
