A 39-year-old Malaysian accidentally killed his nephew with a homemade shotgun after mistaking him for an animal while hunting in Machang, Kelantan

According to Kosmo!, the incident happened around 2am last Friday, 12 May, when the suspect was with his 26-year-old nephew, Muhamad Hasnizi Che Hasmi, in the forest reserve area in Ulu Sat, Bukit Pelanduk.

The police also found a homemade shotgun, a shell casing, and four cartridges

"Based on the evidence, the suspect accidentally shot the victim, thinking that his nephew was a wild animal," Sinar Harian quoted Kelantan police chief Datuk Muhamad Zaki as saying.

Both the suspect and the victim did not have any past criminal records. The victim's body was sent to the forensic unit in Machang Hospital for an autopsy.

The case is currently being investigated under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder and Section 8(a) of the Arms Act 1960 for possessing arms and ammunition without an arms licence or permit.

The police seized the homemade shotgun, a shell casing, and four cartridges found at the scene.

Meanwhile, the victim's wife, Shahirah Shakri, said she found out about the incident at about 9.30am after being contacted by her mother-in-law

The 25-year-old said Muhamad Hasnizi left the house at about 6.30pm on Thursday, 11 May, to fish in the river in the forest reserve.

"While he was in the forest, I couldn't reach him because there was no cellular network," she told Kosmo!

"I was surprised after my mother-in-law informed me that my husband died because he was shot by a hunter," she added.
