[PHOTOS] Malaysian Nurses Seen Exposing Newborn Babies In TikTok Livestreams

The nurses are seen interacting with the infants in questionable ways, including one instance where a nurse kissed a baby while wearing a mask.

Earlier this week, multiple posts in the Malaysian subreddit r/Malaysia raised alarms about an unsettling social media trend: local nurses allegedly livestreaming newborn babies on TikTok

The posts included screenshots of TikTok videos showing nurses placing their phones just inches away from newborns' faces for extended periods while broadcasting live to hundreds, if not thousands, of viewers.

In one of the screenshots of the livestream, where the phone is placed horizontally, close to a baby's face, a nurse is seen in the background going about her work.

According to the author of the post, the nurse would often leave the livestream on for a very long time.

Questions have been raised about the potential harm to the infants, such as eye strain from prolonged exposure to screens, and the ethical implications, including breaches of privacy and lack of parental consent.

The author of the posts also noted concerns about possible negligence, suggesting that the nurses' focus on TikTok livestreams could compromise the quality of care provided.

Many commenters wondered if the parents of these babies had given consent for such livestreams and highlighted the ethical implications of broadcasting minors without permission.

The author mentioned that one of the TikTok account holders claimed to work at a confinement centre, which they argued exempts them from stricter healthcare regulations, including a ban on filming

However, this has prompted other users to question whether the Health Ministry (MOH) has regulatory oversight of confinement centres, and if such actions violate privacy laws regardless of the setting.

The screenshots also reveal instances of the livestreamers interacting with the infants in questionable ways, including one instance where a staff member kissed a baby while wearing a mask.

Although the Redditor emphasised that the nurses appeared gentle and caused no physical harm to the infants, the primary issues of privacy, parental consent, and professional conduct remain unaddressed.

The author claimed that after checking with MOH, they confirmed that what the nurses are doing is wrong, but any response or action against the nurses would take a long time.

SAYS has reached out to MOH for a comment but has yet to receive a reply.

Meanwhile, a check by SAYS showed that the TikTok accounts of the nurses mentioned in the Reddit posts no longer exist

Many users remarked that regardless of whether these nurses are working in hospitals or confinement centres, they shouldn't be allowed to expose someone else's newborns on social media platforms.

"Technically, any filming and taking pictures is not allowed in hospitals. So, sharing them is even more out of the question," commented one user.

"If I were one of the parents, I would've been angry. And why does she need to kiss the baby? This is not her own or a relative's baby for her to play with. Very unprofessional," another commented.
