An initial argument over seats at Miri Airport in Sarawak intensified into an alleged gang assault outside Senai International Airport in Johor on Monday, 7 October

According to the New Straits Times, Kulai district police chief Supt Tan Seng Lee said the victim had a disagreement with one of the assailants at Miri Airport before boarding their flight to Johor.

"The dispute began when they started arguing over seats at Miri Airport's boarding area. The victim and one of the suspects yelled at each other.

"Upon arriving at Senai Airport, the victim was allegedly attacked by a group of men," Tan said.

The daylight assault, caught on video by a passerby, went viral on social media

The 18-second clip of the incident showed eight men attacking the 39-year-old victim with wooden sticks by a roadside near the airport.

The victim, dressed in a black shirt and shorts, was seen lying on the ground and using his hands to protect himself as the assailants hit and kicked him.

The police have since arrested seven men in connection with the incident

The suspects, aged between 25 and 40, were arrested in a series of raids in Johor Bahru and Skudai on Monday night.

The police also seized two cars — a Honda Accord and a Mazda 6 — as well as four mobile phones and two wooden rods.

The case is being investigated under Section 148 and Section 427 of the Penal Code, for rioting and causing mischief, respectively.
