A man in China suffered a near-fatal heart attack while helping his teenage son prepare for his entrance exams

According to South China Morning Post, Zhang, a father in his 40s from Zhejiang province, suffered a heart attack while helping his teenage son prepare for crucial school entrance exams.

Rushed to hospital with severe chest pain and breathing difficulties, Zhang was diagnosed with acute myocardial infarction.

Emergency bypass surgery saved his life, but doctors linked his condition to chronic stress, a consequence of his relentless involvement in his son's academic pursuits.

Like many parents in China, Zhang dedicated his evenings to supervising homework and managing an intense schedule of cram school sessions

The pressure strained his relationship with his son, who felt overwhelmed by his father's high expectations.

This isn't an isolated case. Earlier this year, another father in Zhejiang developed an eye condition tied to stress after pushing his young son to complete assignments.

Such incidents highlight the physical and emotional toll on parents, who often feel obligated to shoulder the burden of their children's success.

In a system where the national college entrance exam, or gaokao, is viewed as a life-defining milestone, the stakes are extraordinarily high

Teachers frequently delegate homework oversight to parents, leaving families to navigate an exhausting cycle of preparation.

Experts urge a shift in approach. Education specialist Ling Zongwei recommends fostering independence in students and creating a more balanced environment.

"The competitive educational environment is exhausting for both the children and their parents," Ling explained.

While some parents insist their sacrifices are necessary, stories like Zhang's serve as stark reminders that even the pursuit of success can come at too high a cost.
