A rape case that had gone cold after 12 years has been solved with the positive identification and arrest of the suspect on Friday, 8 April
The suspect, aged 40, was arrested at 3.30pm at a goat farm in Balik Pulau, Penang.
The man is accused of raping a teenage girl at a workshop in Sungai Pinang, Balik Pulau. The victim was 15 years old at the time of the assault, according to a statement by Bukit Aman yesterday.
Bukit Aman Criminal Investigation Department (CID) director Datuk Seri Adb Jalil Hassan the breakthrough in the case was due to a deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) sample taken at the scene of a rape.
While the DNA sample enabled police to identify the suspect, Jalil did not elaborate on how they matched the DNA that led to his arrest
He explained that they immediately launched an operation to track down the suspect and he was successfully apprehended and remanded at the Barat Daya district police headquarters.
A six-day remand has been secured against the man, until Wednesday, 13 April.
The police are completing the investigation and will refer the investigation papers to the public prosecutor's office for further action. The case is being investigated under Section 376 of the Penal Code for rape.
The section carries a punishment of between 10 to 30 years imprisonment with whipping.
Meanwhile, Jalil said the identification proved that the police force does not give up on any case until criminals are brought to court
"Police have never given up in our efforts to get the latest developments in a case until we have succeeded in identifying the suspects involved so they can face justice," he added.
