METMalaysia Forecasts Clear Mornings & Evening Thunderstorms Throughout Ramadan
Several northern states in Peninsular Malaysia may experience warmer-than-usual temperatures.
The Malaysian Meteorological Department (METMalaysia) said the country will experience a mix of clear weather, thunderstorms, and strong winds during Ramadan
According to Berita Harian, METMalaysia director-general Dr Mohd Hisham Mohd Anip said this year's hot and dry weather cycle will not be as severe as last year's.
During Ramadan, which begins early next month, he said the mornings are expected to be clear, while thunderstorms and strong winds are likely in the afternoon and early evening, especially in these areas:
– Western and interior areas of the Peninsula
– Southern, western, and central Sarawak
– Western Sabah
"The northern areas of the Peninsula, including Perak, Pahang and Kelantan, are expected to experience slightly hotter and drier weather than other places," he said.
Mohd Hisham said the current La Niña phenomenon is weak and is expected to remain so until the middle of this year
Regarding haze and hotspot incidents, he said these phenomena often occur between July and September, during the peak of the southwest monsoon (MBD).
"It is still too early to predict the potential [for haze and hotspots], as it depends on the strength of MBD that will occur later and the weather conditions in neighbouring countries," Mohd Hisham told Berita Harian.
When asked about air pollution from forest fires in neighbouring countries and the risk of transboundary haze, he said widespread fires during MBD could carry smoke into Malaysia, leading to hazy conditions.
"Additionally, local fires would also worsen the situation," Mohd Hisham said.
