The heavy and persistent rain that has led to flooding across several states including the Klang Valley is expected to continue for another day, warned the Malaysian Meteorological Department (METMalaysia)

The department has extended its danger or 'red alert' warning for several areas in multiple states.

METMalaysia took to its official Twitter handle to share the warning that shows several districts in Perak, Pahang, Selangor, and Kuala Lumpur in red, while parts of Kedah, Penang, Kelantan, Putrajaya, and Negeri Sembilan in orange, and regions in Perlis, Terengganu, Melaka, and Johor in yellow.

It said that these areas can expect continuous heavy rain today, 19 December.

According to METMalaysia director-general Muhammad Helmi Abdullah, the low tropical pressure system that is present in the Straits of Melaka is causing heavy rains in almost all states in the peninsula

He said that the other factor for the heavy downpour was the relatively strong monsoon rains.

"Currently, the country is experiencing the northeast monsoon… this continuous heavy rain is also due to the tropical depression," New Straits Times quoted him as saying earlier.

The continuous downpour since Friday has caused flash floods in several areas and has disrupted the lives of thousands of residents

Parts of KL and Selangor, particularly Klang and Shah Alam, are facing severe floods.

Thousands of vehicles have been trapped due to the rising floodwaters, with motorists unable to move.

The persistent rain has also caused four main rivers to cross the danger level.

According to Environment and Water Minister Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man, they are Sungai Batu in Sentul, Sungai Klang in Tun Perak, Sungai Gombak in Jalan Tun Razak, and Sungai Kerayong near Razak Mansion.
