Amirudin: More Independent Chinese Schools To Be Built In Selangor To Meet Growing Demand

Chinese schools in Selangor and Kuala Lumpur have had to turn away between 3,000 and 4,000 applicants each year due to a lack of vacancies.

The Petaling and Hulu Langat districts will see an increase in the number of independent Chinese schools being built

This is correlated with the rise in parents' demands for their children to be enrolled in vernacular schools in Selangor.

"In recent years, there has been an increase in the number of students at these institutions," Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari stated in response to questions by Selangor DAP Political Education Director, Lee Kee Hiong, at the state assembly sitting yesterday, 5 December.

"There is a need to build more [of these] schools to accommodate the growing number of students."

According to a report by The Star in February, Chinese schools in Selangor and Kuala Lumpur have had to turn away between 3,000 and 4,000 applicants each year due to a lack of vacancies.

Amirudin said new locations are currently being identified, and will be finalised by the first quarter of 2023.

Currently, Selangor has only four independent Chinese schools, all of which are located in the Klang district. As such, it is expected that the schools will be located outside of the district.

As of 17 October, Selangor has distributed RM2 million in assistance for independent Chinese schools

The figure comprises the RM26 million allocated in 2022 for the redevelopment and upgrading of infrastructures of schools in the state.

This is an 11.6% increase from 2021's RM23.2 million, which benefitted 600 schools statewide.
