Mior Mohd Zain, a 70-year-old worker at Masjid Jamek Alam Shah on Jalan Tun Razak, Pudu, expressed his disappointment over the presence of sex workers seeking customers in the area where he works

Mior, who has worked at the mosque for 40 years, said that while this issue has persisted for decades, it was particularly prevalent in the 1970s, reported Harian Metro.

"I started working at this mosque in 1984, and even before that, I noticed prostitutes loitering and soliciting clients on the sidewalks in front of the mosque.

"The situation was so serious that prostitutes offered me as little as RM30 as I walked to a bank across from the mosque," he said.

According to the mosque worker, the illegal activity has also affected those working in the area

He claimed that female bank workers had complained about being mistaken for sex workers because of their attire.

"This also tarnishes the view of the mosque, as those exiting the prayer hall are immediately confronted with the sight of prostitutes soliciting clients," he said.

Mior added that the sex workers are particularly active at night, between 11pm and midnight.

Meanwhile, the Imam of the Masjid Jamek Alam Shah, Mohd Hanif Syakir Mohd Yusuf, 30, noted that immoral behaviour occurring around the 74-year-old mosque is not new, and the mosque is well aware of the issue

"The social problems in this area can be seen from two groups: women and transgenders.

"Many preventive activities have been carried out by the authorities, but they return less than a month after operations are conducted," he said.

He added that the mosque cannot take serious action because they do not have the authority to do so.

However, he mentioned that the mosque is willing to cooperate with anyone interested in addressing this long-standing issue.

"The mosque tries to help as much as we can, such as putting up warning signs against immoral activities outside the mosque," he said.
