The Perlis Perikatan Nasional (PN) government is likely to follow in the footsteps of its northern neighbour Kedah by prohibiting gaming and lottery businesses

According to New Straits Times, Perlis Menteri Besar (MB) Mohd Shukri Ramli said the administration is currently investigating all aspects before making the move.

"InshaAllah, once I am done evaluating all the aspects concerned with the state legal advisor, I will make an announcement."

"I am committed to ensure that our people will live in peace without the element of gambling. We will study all the relevant aspects before we roll out any move," Shukri said.

Meanwhile, the single opposition member of the Perlis Legislative Assembly, Gan Ay Ling of Indera Kayangan, encouraged the state to increase enforcement against gaming in the Muslim community, saying that they should be educated on the negative impact of gambling on their lives.

Following the execution of the state government's ban, legal gaming and lottery establishments in Kedah have effectively stopped operations starting 1 January

Kedah Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor declared in November 2021 that the state government would not issue new gambling licences or renew existing ones after they expire.

He also stated that Kedah's government would implement stricter liquor sales regulations in areas with low market demand.

According to Sanusi, the decision had nothing to do with racial, religious, or political considerations, and was made to stop actions that would cause social degradation.

The gambling ban in Kedah follows similar decisions in Kelantan and Terengganu.
