Police In France Mistook Smell Of Belacan In M'sian Woman's Home For A Rotting Dead Body

The woman's neighbours had reported an "odd, bad smell that they had never smelled before" to the police.

"What was your worst kitchen failure?" a netizen asked the Twitterverse on 10 April.

Among the over 100 replies to @notorioustapir's tweet was one from @thezulfo, who shared his friend's wife's experience while living in Paris, France.

His tweet has garnered over 20,000 retweets at the time of writing.

According to the tweet, the Malaysian woman was "excitedly preparing to make sambal belacan when French police officers showed up at her door"

The policemen told the woman that neighbours had reported an "odd, bad smell that they had never smelled before."

The neighbours described the smell as "possibly coming from a rotting dead body"

The alarming report led the police officers to investigate the home, the Twitter user explained.

Amused netizens had a field day comparing the pungent smell of the popular shrimp paste condiment to that of a rotting corpse
