Standard 1 To 3 Students Will No Longer Have To Take Exams From Next Year
Instead, a more objective form of assessment will be implemented.
Education Minister Dr Maszlee Malik took to his Twitter account today to announce that the PH Government is abolishing examinations for Form students in Year One to Three
The abolishment of the exams comes into effect from next year, Dr Maszlee added.
He tweeted: "Examinations for students in Level 1 (primary year 1, 2 and 3) will be abolished and will be replaced by a more objective assessment beginning 2019."
At the time of writing this story, however, there were no further details on the decision.
Reactions from netizens to the announcement has been mixed:
The move to abolish Level 1 exams by Putrajaya is similar to the decision by Singapore for pupils at the Primary 1 and 2 levels
Singapore has decided to test the pupils' progress through bite-sized pieces of work such as worksheets, class work and homework, which would give them a more holistic understanding of the pupils' progress, reported the Straits Times in September.
"We know that teaching and learning comprise three important components - curricular goals and content, pedagogy and assessment, and together they form a triangle.
"Today, the three components are not balanced. As we overemphasised the assessment, we inadvertently reduced the time available for schools to focus on teaching and learning. We need to redress this balance," Singapore's Education Minister Ong Ye Kung was quoted as saying.
