Sarawak's Longest-Serving Chief Minister Tun Taib Mahmud Dies

Former Sarawak governor Tun Abdul Taib Mahmud died has in Kuala Lumpur at 4.28am today, 21 February

Taib, who served as the state's chief minister for 33 years, passed away at the Cardiac Vascular Sentral Kuala Lumpur hospital (CVSKL), reported the New Straits Times. He was 87.

Tourism, Creative Industry and Arts Minister Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah confirmed Taib's passing.

Taib's remains will be brought to the Sarawak legislative assembly building for final respects today before burial.

Taib served as Sarawak chief minister from 1981 to 2014, and was the second-longest serving member of parliament (MP) for 38 years

He was Kota Samarahan MP from 1970 to 2008, reported FMT.

Taib also served as Sarawak governor for the past 10 years until late last month.

Sarawak Premier Abang Johari Openg described Taib as the father of modern Sarawak. However, over the years, he also faced allegations of bribery and abuse of power.

The authorities had said there was a lack of evidence to substantiate those allegations.
