Muar member of parliament (MP) Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman was sentenced to seven years in jail, two strokes of the cane, and slapped with a RM10 million fine

The jail sentences will be added two more years if he could not pay the fine.

Judge Azhar Abdul Hamid of the Kuala Lumpur High Court meted out the sentences after the Malaysian United Democratic Alliance (MUDA) president was found guilty of four charges involving criminal breach of trust (CBT), misappropriation of property, and money laundering linked to RM1.12 million of Bersatu youth monies.

Syed Saddiq was allowed the stay of execution of all the sentences pending his appeal.

Earlier today, 9 November, the former Youth and Sports Minister was convicted of abetting the Bersatu youth wing's former assistant treasurer, Rafiq Hakim, in the commission of CBT of RM1 million at CIMB Bank Bhd in Menara CIMB KL Sentral on 6 March 2020

He was also found to have misused RM120,000 from the bank account belonging to Armada Bumi Bersatu Enterprise for himself by causing Rafiq to dispose of the money at Malayan Banking Bhd in Taman Pandan Jaya here between 8 April and 21 April 2018.

The second-term MP was also convicted on two counts of money laundering involving proceeds from unlawful activities of RM50,000 each transferred from his Maybank Islamic Bhd account into his Amanah Saham Bumiputera account at a bank in Taman Perling, Johor Bahru, on 16 and 19 June  2018.

"The prosecution has proven the case beyond a reasonable doubt," said judge Azhar in delivering a summary of his judgement.
