A 22-year-old mother was arrested after her toddler tested positive for methamphetamine and amphetamine at Taiping Hospital
District police chief ACP Razlam Ab Hamid said his team received a report from the hospital on Tuesday, 11 July, reported New Straits Times.
It is understood that the drugs in the toddler's system were discovered after her mother, who is a housewife, took her to the hospital due to sleeping difficulties.
"The toddler was sent to her grandmother's house as her 22-year-old mother wanted to buy something.
"When it was time to sleep, the victim suddenly cried and showed uncontrollable behaviour, prompting the victim's mother to take her to the hospital for further examination," Harian Metro quoted Razlam as saying.
While at the hospital, the toddler tested positive for drugs, which prompted a medical officer to alert the police
The police arrested the mother and subjected her to a urine test. The results came back positive for methamphetamine.
The case is currently being investigated under Section 31(1)(a) of the Child Act 2001 for neglecting, abandoning, or exposing a child to physical or emotional injuries.
If convicted, the offender may face up to 20 years in jail, a RM50,000 fine, or both.
