A 37-year-old woman, who tried a viral TikTok hack for cooking poached eggs in a microwave, has suffered burns to her face

"The burning lasted for 12 hours. It just didn't stop," described Shafia Bashir, whose attempt to poach eggs using the hack backfired after the shortcut blew up in her face, leaving her with excruciating burns.

The UK-based woman reportedly learned about the hack three years ago but was shocked when she tried to replicate the process "exactly the same" as she usually does and failed.

"I did it exactly the same as I usually do it. I had already made the toast, I was starving!" Shafia, who learned the hack from her former mother-in-law, was quoted as saying by the New York Post.

The hack for cooking a poached egg in the microwave is simple

It requires:

- Filling a mug with boiling water
- Cracking an egg into the water-filled mug
- Poking a hole into the yolk, to avoid it exploding in the microwave
- Placing the mug in the microwave for a minute or so
- Using a spoon to remove the poached egg from the water

However, when Shafia used a cold spoon to remove the egg, it erupted "like a fountain" and scalded the right side of her face, leaving her in the "most excruciating" pain of her life, reported The Independent.

Shafia tried running her face under the tap, but the burning sensation forced her to rush to the emergency department of a hospital

She put her face under the tap for 20 minutes, but it didn't help.

She then called a friend to come over to look after her daughter so she could go to the hospital.

"It was a terrifying time for me," said the mother of one, adding, "I was in absolute agony."

Fortunately for Shafia, there was no scarring to her face

"My face has healed now, luckily with no scars. I used Vaseline, and Sudocrem... whatever I could get my hands on," said a traumatised Shafia, who has now vowed never to eat an egg again.

But she also sees the funny side of her experience and made light of it, saying that she used her burn injuries to recreate Tony Montana from Scarface for her 15,000 TikTok followers.

A word of caution: If you're planning to cook eggs in a microwave, remember that when you remove the egg from the microwave, it will carry on cooking for awhile and any disruption could cause it to burst
