A school in Tumpat, Kelantan, was thrown into chaos after about 30 of its students were struck by hysteria on Sunday night, 19 May

According to Harian Metro, the students, who lived in the school's dormitory, began raving and screaming in the school surau at around 8pm.

Saleha, a local resident in her 20s, told the news outlet that she was at her house across from the school when she was startled by the sound of screams and hurried outside to investigate the source of the commotion.

"From outside the school fence, I saw a chaotic scene with the sound of several students screaming, while others were unconscious. Some of them also complained of feeling pain.

"My cousin, who is also a student at the school and was on the scene, said they were all in the surau and had just finished reciting the Quran when the power went out for a brief moment," she added.

The hysteria began when one student started screaming during the Quran reading session, which then prompted other students to follow suit, behaving as if they were all possessed

Saleha said that the school authorities swiftly relocated all the affected students out of the surau to an open area, where the school's ustaz and several Islamic healers arrived to try and calm them down.

She added that the situation had returned to normal after nearly three hours, and that all students who remained in the school dormitory were allowed to return home.

"This is not the first time such an incident has occurred; as far as I recall, the last [mass hysteria] took place four years ago, while I was still a student there.

"I understand that there are a few 'haunted' spots in the school, and we have become somewhat accustomed to hysteria incidents affecting the students," she said.
