On Tuesday, 6 December, a fire broke out at the Ministry of Finance (MOF). It was said to be contained with no casualties reported.

In an official statement, MOF has since confirmed the incident, calling it a "small fire that broke out at its dumpsite" located at Level G, North Block of the Treasury Building, reported New Straits Times.

"The small fire was put out completely by the Putrajaya fire and rescue team and was confirmed to have not spread to other areas in the building. Neither casualties nor losses were reported," the statement said.

The ministry is now waiting for an official report on the cause

The fire was first noticed by an electrical maintenance staff member, and building workers tried to put out the fire on their own but to no avail, according to Putrajaya police district chief ACP A Asmadi Abdul Aziz.

A Bernama report cited Precinct 7 fire and rescue station deputy chief M Surass as saying that the station received a call at 2.34pm yesterday, following which three fire engines were dispatched to the scene.

The operation ended about an hour later at 3.39pm.

Meanwhile, The Star quoted Asmadi as saying that investigations revealed that the fire might have been caused by sparks from renovation works that had set a pile of papers aflame at the dumpsite.

"However, the real cause of the fire is still being investigated by the fire and rescue department."

The fire at the Treasury Building was captured in viral videos on social media.
