Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi's swollen eyes are due to a recent surgery for optic nerve damage, according to his daughter Datuk Nurulhidayah Ahmad Zahid

Nurulhidayah's clarification on her father's appearance comes after photos of the UMNO president with swelling around his eyes went viral.

"Yes, his optical nerves were not functioning properly, so that is why his eyes appear to be drooping," she wrote on her Instagram account yesterday, 4 July.

"Why should he do (plastic surgery on) his face, he is not a superstar. He had an issue with his optical nerves that was causing him harm, there was a need to address it.

"But it's natural that people like to spread lies more than knowing the truth," Nurulhidayah replied sarcastically to a netizen asking about her father's swollen eyes after seeing him on the news on Tuesday.

According to Home Minister Saifuddin Nasution Ismail, Zahid was on leave for two weeks last month

Zahid, who is also the Rural and Regional Development Minister, was seen wearing sunglasses at recent events he attended, reported New Straits Times.

Nurulhidayah explained on Instagram that her father opted out of taking a long break following the surgery because he holds great responsibilities in the government and politics.

Elaborating on Zahid's eye condition, UMNO Rafi Awg Kechik said in a Facebook post yesterday that his president needed to undergo surgery on the eyelids of both his eyes to address the issue of excessive skin, which reportedly covered up to 70% of his sight.

He said the removal of the excess skin was necessary to avoid potential complications.
