A leaking roof forced the Malaysia Open to suspend matches on two of the three badminton courts at the Axiata Stadium in Bukit Jalil yesterday, 7 January

According to the New Straits Times, the leaking roof affected the women's doubles match between China's Jia Yi Fan-Zhang Shi Xin and Malaysia's Go Pei Kee-Teoh Mei Xing midway through the first game.

The men's singles clash between Canada's Brian Yang and India's HS Prannoy had to be suspended due to the same issue.

In response, the Badminton World Federation (BWF) postponed five matches from yesterday to today, 8 January.

Speaking to SAYS, a witness said some spectators had to be moved to different seats at around 4pm when the roof started leaking

"Many badminton fans were upset because the games were delayed, with only one court functioning," she said.

Below is the video showing the rainwater leakage:

Malaysia Stadium Corporation chief executive officer Illyas Jamil explained that the leakage was caused by ongoing roof replacement work

The roof has been undergoing refurbishment since last April and is expected to be completed in the coming months.

He said the heavy rain and winds from a thunderstorm might have caused water to seep through the roof and onto the courts.

"This is the first time this has happened where it affected the court area. The leak has been identified, and we have done repair work to ensure no more water will fall onto the courts.

"We have covered the area where the leak happened, and we will ensure that there will be no more leaks until this tournament ends," said Ilyas.
