Instagram is launching a new video editing app called Edits

Edits will include a dedicated section for inspiration, a space to store and organise video ideas, a high-quality camera, a full suite of editing tools, and the ability to collaborate with others on drafts

This move by Instagram could potentially attract video creators who are looking for alternative platforms to TikTok and its editing tool, CapCut.

"I think it'll end up pretty different than CapCut. Edits will have a much broader range of creative tools and probably a smaller addressable audience," said Mosseri.

"Think a place to track all your ideas instead of templates. Think AI video editing tools on a per clip or per video basis. Think new insights on why your videos are succeeding or struggling," he added.

Adam Mosseri, the head of Instagram, took to the platform to announce the new video editing app

He highlighted its comprehensive features, describing it as more than just a simple editing tool.

Edits will include a dedicated section for inspiration, a space to store and organize video ideas, a high-quality camera, a full suite of editing tools, and the ability to collaborate with others on drafts. Users who share their Edits videos on Instagram will have access to detailed insights and analytics about their performance.

Edits is an iOS app and still a work in progress at the moment. You can opt to receive a notification when it is available in March. Mosseri mentioned that an Android version is coming soon.

Instagram, owned by Meta, announced its new video editing app only hours after TikTok became unavailable in the US due to a national security law

This law requires TikTok's Chinese parent company, ByteDance, to sell its US operations. Although TikTok has started to restore service following a halt in enforcement of the ban, the app's future in the US remains uncertain.

ByteDance also owns the popular video editing app CapCut, which was temporarily unavailable for US users as well.
