Canvas, revealed on 3 October, is designed to feel more like a digital notepad, streamlining the process of working on larger writing and coding projects.
The tool is currently in beta and marks the biggest design shift since ChatGPT's debut in 2022. It aims to fix a common complaint with the existing interface — the constant back-and-forth of chat prompts, which can feel clunky when you're trying to refine ideas or make edits.
"Although the (ChatGPT) interface is easy to use and works well for many tasks, it's limited when you want to work on projects that require editing and revisions. Canvas offers a new interface for this kind of work," OpenAI said in a blog post.
The upgrade comes at a time when OpenAI is focused on expanding its product offerings
Having recently launched GPT-4o and the reasoning model o1, the company also pulled in USD6.6 billion (RM28 billion) from investors.
The company has bold financial goals, aiming to increase revenue from USD3.7 billion (RM15.6 billion) in 2024 to USD11.6 billion (RM49 billion) by 2025.
Improvements like Canvas could help drive more premium subscriptions and keep OpenAI on track to meet those targets.

If you subscribe to ChatGPT Plus or Teams, you can try it out by selecting "ChatGPT 4o with Canvas" from the dropdown menu. Enterprise and Edu users will gain access next week.
Here's how it works: Simply enter a prompt related to writing or coding, and ChatGPT will launch Canvas in a new window. For writing, you can highlight text to get suggestions or ask questions, and use shortcuts to polish grammar, simplify language, or even throw in some emoji for fun. The traditional chat sidebar remains intact, so you can switch back to the conversation when needed.
Coding on Canvas follows a similar workflow. You can prompt the AI to review code, add comments or logs, fix bugs, and even port the code into a different language — options include JavaScript, Python, Java, C++, and more.
