Dyson conducted an unexpected round of layoffs at its Singapore office on 1 October, reportedly leaving their employees in a state of shock

The retrenchments, conducted with little prior notice, were marked by a discreet process. Impacted employees were individually called into meetings, where they were informed that their roles were being made redundant.

Previously, the tech firm had announced that its global head office in Singapore would not be directly impacted by the global restructuring that involved around 1,000 layoffs in Britain in July, reported Channel News Asia.

While the exact number of employees let go remains uncertain, those from manufacturing and procurement departments were primarily affected

According to an employee, Dyson had already conducted a round of layoffs at its development centre in Johor Bahru, but the Singapore retrenchments were unexpected.

The United Workers of Electronics and Electrical Industries (UWEEI), representing the industry's workforce, expressed disappointment at being given just one day's notice ahead of the retrenchments. They have raised the matter with the Ministry of Manpower in Singapore and pledged to support the affected workers through job matching and retraining.

Dyson, while acknowledging the layoffs, emphasised that it is continuing to adjust its teams and remains committed to growing its presence in Singapore

The company did not disclose how many employees were affected but highlighted that it was following all relevant guidelines and providing support, including employment assistance.

The firm continues to invest in advanced manufacturing, research, and engineering activities, with a new battery plant under development in Tuas. However, the abrupt nature of the layoffs has left many employees anxious about potential further cuts.
