A recent survey indicated that the younger generation prefers playing video games over watching movies

A 2024 report by the Entertainment Software Association (ESA) revealed that a significant majority of Gen Z individuals (63%) prefer playing video games to watching movies, while only 14% of Boomers share this preference.

This trend reflects a broader shift in entertainment consumption habits, as well as evolving social interactions and technology engagement. In fact, 71% of Gen Z believe that video games are a great way to socialise, compared to only 21% of Boomers.

Unlike movies, which often require passive viewing, video games offer an interactive medium that allows players to actively participate in the narrative

This level of engagement is particularly appealing to Gen Z, who grew up with digital technology and value interactivity and connectivity. Video games provide a unique environment where players can shape the story and outcome, making each playthrough a distinct and personalised experience.

Beyond single-player titles, modern video games often serve as communal platforms for social interaction and connection. Gen Z, in particular, values the social aspect of gaming, using it to connect with friends and build relationships within virtual environments.

The ESA's report highlights the role of gaming in fostering a sense of community, which is increasingly important in an era where digital interactions are becoming more prevalent, especially following the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic.

The video game industry has surpassed the movie industry in terms of global valuation, reaching USD184 billion (RM765 billion) in 2023 compared to the movie industry's USD97.5 billion (RM405 billion)

The rapid growth of the video game industry is driven by a number of factors, including technological advancements such as VR, AR, cloud gaming, and subscription models. Video games are not only outpacing movies in terms of daily engagement but are also playing a significant role in driving innovation and development in the technology sector.

The growing preference among Gen Z for video games over movies reflects a significant shift in entertainment consumption habits

As this generation continues to influence market trends and enter the workforce, the entertainment industry is likely to adapt to their preferences.

This shift will likely drive increased investment in game development, a surge in interactive media education programmes, and a redefinition of storytelling to incorporate more interactive elements.

The growing influence of video games will also challenge traditional media forms to innovate and remain relevant. Ultimately, Gen Z's preference for video games is a strong indicator of the evolving landscape of entertainment and its potential impact on the global economy.
