Humanoid robots have joined police patrols in Shenzhen, China, turning heads as they interact with the public in real-time

Clad in high-visibility vests, these machines are part of an expanding experiment in automated law enforcement, South China Morning Post reported.

Dubbed the PM01, these robots stand at 1.38 metres and weigh 40kg, with a price tag of 88,000 yuan (RM54,000) each.

But what makes them stand out is their ability to move fluidly, navigate complex environments, and even perform advanced manoeuvres like front flips.

Engineered by EngineAI, a Shenzhen-based startup, the PM01s are powered by sophisticated reinforcement learning algorithms, allowing them to walk naturally and respond accurately to voice commands

A viral video captured a PM01 walking in formation as it patrolled alongside officers, shaking hands with passersby, and responding to voice commands.

Many commented that the robot exuded an almost human-like presence.

Online, reactions have been a mix of fascination and scepticism.

Some online users likened the robots to RoboCop or Iron Man, while others speculated on the broader implications for home and workplace automation

Some see them as an exciting leap forward for public safety, while others question their practicality and effectiveness beyond public engagement.

For now, the PM01 remains an assistant rather than a replacement for human officers.
