Government Mulling A One-Off Subsidy For EV Purchases
The goal is to increase the number of EV owners in Malaysia.
The electric vehicle (EV) movement in Malaysia will potentially receive a boost from the government
The Investment, Trade, and Industry Ministry (MITI) has proposed a one-time subsidy to promote the ownership of EVs and stimulate industry growth in the country.
Its deputy minister, Liew Chin Tong, revealed that the proposal was presented to the Finance Ministry during a meeting of the National EV Steering Committee (NEVSC).

Liew says that the Finance Ministry is still fine-tuning the proposal
Speaking during a question-and-answer session at the Dewan Rakyat yesterday, 28 February, Liew said that the proposal may help increase EV ownership in Malaysia.
"It has been observed that this one-time subsidy can encourage people to switch from using internal combustion engine vehicles to EVs and further help the country reduce petrol subsidies for the long-term," said Liew.
"This suggestion is being fine-tuned by the finance ministry," he added.
Liew's statement was a response to a supplementary question from Iskandar Dzulkarnain Abdul Khalid (PN-Kuala Kangsar), who asked if there were any incentives to assist the M40 group in owning EVs.
Malaysia is steadily progressing towards fully supporting EVs on the road
Recently, Melaka announced plans to have at least 350 EV charging bays (EVCBs) by the year 2025. This announcement is in line with the planning guidelines outlined by the Town and Country Planning Department.
National carmaker Proton is aiming to launch their EV this year, with another EV launch scheduled within six months:
