Every Malaysian has passed through a toll booth at least once in their lives

Toll booths are an inevitable part of driving in Malaysia. Whether it's for long-distance driving, or short trips in the city, Malaysians are bound to pass through at least one toll booth throughout their journey. One payment method that has been going strong since its inception is the SmartTAG system, introduced in 1999.

The SmartTAG system uses a card reader device to transmit the card data to the toll booth for the electronic toll collection (ETC). The company behind SmartTAG, Touch 'n Go, discontinued the sales of SmartTAG in 2018 in favour of the RFID system.

However, SmartTAG booths are still widely used around the country.

Recently, Amtel launched a replacement for the SmartTAG device

Amtel has recently launched the Lokatag Pro, a revolutionary 'Connected Toll Reader and Dashcam' in Malaysia. Originally introduced in 2019 for easy toll payments, Lokatag has transformed into a comprehensive device catering to everyday driving requirements.

The toll reader employs infrared technology from Efkon, accommodating both traditional and modern NFC Touch 'n Go cards, enabling users to breeze through SmartTAG lanes without stopping. This compact device also doubles as a dashcam, recording crisp video footage to boost safety and security on the road.

The Lokatag Pro isn't just a toll reader; it's much more

Lokatag Pro incorporates an automotive-grade e-SIM and various connected services, such as GPS tracking, real-time alerts, cloud remote control, and over-the-air updates. The inclusion of built-in sensors and a monitoring system elevates vehicle security by notifying users of any suspicious activities and geo-tagging incidents for potential video evidence.

In a bid to improve this advanced toll reader, the partnership with Zurich Malaysia takes it a step further, simplifying motor insurance and takaful claims procedures for Loka App users. For each pre-order of Lokatag Pro, Zurich is set to offer a complimentary car insurance coverage package. Additional details about the complimentary car insurance package will be disclosed by Amtel and Zurich in the near future.

The Lokatag Pro is priced at RM1,799 and is currently open for pre-orders on its official website

Deliveries are scheduled to commence in March 2024, with the added perk of complimentary installation for customers.
