Taiwanese company ProLogium Technology has introduced a groundbreaking advancement in battery technology at the Paris Motor Show

Its new lithium ceramic battery utilises a 100% silicon composite anode, marking a significant departure from traditional lithium-ion batteries.

The result of this innovation, developed in collaboration with FEV Group, a German automotive engineering firm, is a battery with superior energy density and charging efficiency. ProLogium's unveiling marks a critical step towards the wider adoption of lithium ceramic batteries within the automotive industry and signals the technology's growing commercial viability.

Check out the company's explainer video below:

Here are some of the benefits offered by this game-changing EV tech:

1. Increased energy density

ProLogium's new lithium ceramic battery (LCB) significantly outperforms conventional lithium-ion batteries in terms of energy density. It can store more energy in the same amount of space (749Wh/L) and weighs less for the amount of energy it holds (321Wh/kg). To put that in perspective, it's better than other common battery types like lithium iron phosphate and lithium-nickel-manganese-cobalt, which hold less energy. This means LCBs can power things for longer without needing to be recharged as often, and they're lighter, which makes them more efficient.

ProLogium also anticipates even greater performance gains, projecting an increase to 823Wh/L and 355Wh/kg by the end of 2024. This projected improvement will further widen the performance gap, leaving traditional lithium-ion batteries lagging behind by an estimated 77%.

2. Super-fast recharge times

Independent testing by TÜV Rheinland confirms the remarkable charging speed of ProLogium's LCB. In just five minutes, the battery can be charged from 5% to 60%, reaching 80% capacity in a mere 8.5 minutes.

This ultra-fast charging technology reduces waiting times at charging stations by an impressive 83.3%. This not only enhances efficiency for EV drivers but also improves the turnover rate at charging stations, addressing the growing concerns over limited charging infrastructure and lengthy wait times.

3. Increased range from a single charge

Thanks to the battery's lighter weight and higher power density, a quick five-minute charge translates to approximately 300km of driving range, significantly surpassing the industry average of 30 minutes for a comparable charge.

4. Easier repairs in the future

The battery's modular design simplifies repairs and streamlines the recycling process. This approach minimises maintenance expenses for EV owners and contributes to a higher resale value for used electric vehicles.

This new battery tech looks to be highly promising for the future of EVs

"Our next-generation battery technology effectively addresses many of the challenges in the electric vehicle industry. Our goal is to be a game changer in the market, injecting new energy into the electric vehicle sector," stated Vincent Yang, ProLogium's Founder and Chairman, in a statement.
