Police Recover Stolen Ferrari Using Apple AirPods Left Behind By Owner

Police in Connecticut, US, successfully recovered a stolen Ferrari by utilising a pair of Apple AirPods left behind by the vehicle's owner
The Waterbury Police Department (WPD) responded to a report on 16 September concerning a stolen Ferrari 812 GTS, valued at approximately USD575,000 (RM2,396,312), from the city of Greenwich, Connecticut.
The WPD's Auto Theft Task Force located the vehicle by tracking the Apple AirPods that had been inadvertently left inside the car by the owner at the time of the theft.
The Apple AirPods, priced at USD129 (RM537), feature a tracking capability through the Find My app, which played a crucial role in helping police locate the stolen Ferrari
These wireless earbuds can broadcast their location to a nearby iPhone, providing valuable information that led to the recovery of the stolen Italian supercar.
The stolen Ferrari was discovered near a petrol station on South Main Street in Waterbury, Connecticut, as reported by WFSB. When police attempted to apprehend the driver, the suspect fled the scene, leaving behind their iPhone in the stolen vehicle.
Through the iPhone, police were able to identify the driver as Dion Schontten, a 22-year-old repeat offender. On Thursday, 26 September, Schontten was apprehended while driving a stolen Acura vehicle.
While AirTags are commonly used for tracking stolen or lost property, this particular case involved two different Apple products that proved instrumental in the investigation: a pair of AirPods and an iPhone
If the Ferrari owner had not inadvertently left the AirPods behind, and if the suspect had not left their iPhone in the stolen vehicle, it is possible that the police may not have been able to solve the case as swiftly.
