National carmaker Proton has launched a RM253 million expansion project, adding new stamping facilities at its Tanjong Malim plant, known as Stamping E-Line and F-Line

In a recent statement, Proton announced that the expansion will boost its parts stamping capacity at the plant as the company prepares to relocate its Proton Saga production line from Shah Alam by 2026.

The new facilities will also support increased production volumes and future model introductions.

The new E-Line will feature a four-stage stamping process with a 1,600-tonne machine and three 800-tonne machines. The F-Line will use a five-stage process with one 2,000-tonne machine, one 1,200-tonne machine, and three 1,000 tonne machines.

Proton will also use robots to move parts between workstations and apply Industry 4.0 technology, which leverages real-time data and machine learning to enhance part quality.

These new stamping lines aim to reduce Proton's dependence on imported parts, mitigating vulnerability to global trade disruptions and boosting the local supply chain.

Proton chief executive officer Dr Li Chunrong said that the new lines are crucial for Proton's expansion plans

"For the whole of 2023 and up to June 2024, our Tanjong Malim plant has stamped out 6.067 million components, of which 395,211 are from the new D-Line," he said in a statement.

"This number will grow exponentially when production of the Proton Saga is relocated here in 2026," he added.

Proton also said that the new lines will contribute to the ongoing development of the region.

"At the same time, the investment builds on competencies available in Tanjong Malim and will contribute towards the ongoing development of the Automotive High Tech Valley (AHTV)," said Proton.
