Telegram And WeChat To Meet MCMC's Social Media Licensing Requirements
The new social media licensing will take effect from 1 January 2025.
Both Telegram and WeChat are actively seeking to obtain the necessary official licences to operate in Malaysia
This is according to a press statement by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) on 26 December.
The MCMC praised Telegram and Tencent, WeChat's parent company, for their efforts to meet the licensing requirements.
"Both platforms are expected to meet the necessary requirements to operate in Malaysia soon," MCMC's statement read.

MCMC said the new social media licensing will take effect from 1 January 2025
The new licensing rules aim to enhance online safety and user protection for messaging and social media platforms.
This framework focuses on protecting vulnerable users, such as children, while ensuring safety, improved user experience, and protection from harmful content for all Malaysians.
The Malaysian government has mandated that social media and online messaging platforms with a minimum of eight million users must apply for a government licence.
The MCMC has called on all social media platforms to submit their applications by 31 December 2024
The government body cautioned that "failure to do so may result in regulatory actions, which all parties wish to avoid."
In addition, the commission has reiterated its commitment to providing guidance and support throughout the application process to ensure a smooth transition for all involved.
In August, Google, Meta, X, Apple, Amazon, Grab, and more urged the Malaysian government to pause its plans to introduce social media licensing.
