How do Workers Develop an Unsafe Mentality?

Employers are usually blamed during workplace accidents but there are also incidents that the worker themselves did certain failures. This includes failing to wear protective equipment or deliberately not following safety procedures and protocols. Despite constant efforts of a company to eliminate all workplace hazards and ensuring the welfare of their employees, workplace negligence can easily result to a workplace accident. This leads companies to question the mentality of their workers. Are they employing lazy people or is it a characteristic that is developed within the workplace? In most cases, it is the fact that workers are being constantly exposed to life-threatening hazards in a daily basis that leads them to develop an immunity from it. For example, construction jobs will constantly require workers to transport certain heavy objects, from metal beams to large bags of cement. In the beginning, workers are aware of the possible dangers of carrying such objects like back injuries and having the possibility of it falling on their toes. As a consequence, they use the appropriate lifting equipment as well as wearing appropriate safety equipment like boots, gloves, and helmets. Though, after a few months of being constantly exposed to the hazards. Workers will start to get comfortable since they have not experienced any accidents in the duration of their employment. From time-to-time, they will start to omit using personal protective equipment and eventually start to hand-carry heavy objects since it is usually faster especially when dealing with individual objects. The constant hazard approach desensitizes the workers from the dangers. This is an unsafe mentality since safety procedures and equipment are only effective if they are used. As soon as workers start to neglect their usage, it is as if they went to work without any proper protection. Additionally, influence also plays a role in spreading an unsafe mentality. Workers are constantly being dealt with stress in the workplace and seeing other workers doing particular jobs in a different way leads them to think that it is acceptable. Evidently, they start to adopt actions without thinking of the possible risks or if they still abide by the safety rules and instructions. Eliminating an unsafe mentality is correctable through education. It is a matter of when and how to provide them. Group of Companies Penalized for Violations

Several incidents in the past have involved the transportation of hazardous chemicals or flammable substances. During these incidents, fatalities arise and environmental damages were inflicted. Constant efforts are being placed in order to prevent incidents like these from happening again. Measures include training employees of proper handling, placing chemicals in favorable conditions, and informing all involved personnel of the transported chemicals. Though, due to the tedious nature, most companies have deliberately skipped the steps that are supposed to ensure the safety of the workers. This was the case in a recent press release by the FAA. The organization conducted its usual inspection and found a total of seven companies involved in multiple violations leading to citations and penalties. The companies involved are New Chapter, Click Bond, All Tire Supply, Kretek International, Harland Clarke, Q.G. Investments, and Quimica Bicentenario. All of which are companies involved in the utilization and production of hazardous chemicals. Four of the companies: New Chapter, Click Bond, All Tire Supply, and Kretek International, have acquired nearly the same violations. They were primarily found to have failed to accompany their chemical shipments with shipping papers. The papers were intended to indicate the hazardous nature of the contents in order to provide awareness to possible handlers and transporters. Additionally, the method of packaging was found to be non-compliant with the Hazardous Materials Regulations which greatly increased the risk of chemical leakage and explosion, fire and corrosion incidents. Also, they were alleged to be incapable to act upon emergency situations since there was the lack of an emergency response information. Its main purpose is to inform employees of actions to be undertaken during accidents considering that certain chemicals that have caught fire cannot be extinguished with plain water. Employees themselves were also found to have been inadequately trained in hazardous materials handling. The remaining three companies received nearly the same citations except for training violations on Q.G. Investments and packaging violations on Harland Clarke and Quimica Bicentenario. Penalties given to the seven companies ranged from $54,000 to $91,000. The responsibility of ensuring safety and reliability of services should be strictly undertaken by companies. One of the steps to be undertaken is to ensure that employees are knowledgeable of their field, from hazards to proper procedures. In order to achieve such, training should be provided. Updating the 1999 Clothing Standard

The Ebola pandemic has opened the eyes of the U.S. government and associated departments of the dangers imposed by liquid-borne pathogens. This has led for several standards to be considered outdated and in need of immediate revision. One of them is the clothing standard which was enacted since 1999. The development of technology has improved the protecting capacity of personal protective equipment ranging from overalls to gloves. Also, new research and studies have found new recommendations that will ensure the efficiency of protecting workers. These have been the basis for the Tentative Interim Amendment for the NFPA 1999: Standard on Protective Clothing for Emergency Medical Operations. Involved institutions and organizations in conducting the studies used for the recommendations are the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention, the World Health Organization, the Human and Health Services Office of the Assistant Secretary for Preparedness and Response, and the Interagency Board for Equipment Standardization and Interoperability. Additions and omission will be made in the standards that will help better protect first respondents during medical emergency operations. According to the amendment, it will revise the standards of clothing equipment by requiring minimum design, performance, testing, documentation, and certification requirements for both single-use and multiple-use protective clothing equipment. Also, the entire body must clothed and protected from the head down to the toe, leaving no section exposed. The amendment has also found loopholes in the defining of certain phrases and terms that led to the compromise of the safety of the workers. According to the revision, emergency medical cleaning/utility glove will now be classified as essential and a requirement during emergency patient care. It was also well-stated in the old standards that gloves do not provide the essential protection for workers in which the revised standards will certainly change. The revision is still in its early stages of submission and approval. It is open for comments and bound for changes depending on the legibility of the submitted concerns. The deadline for the comments is on January 15, 2015. First responders like first-aiders and medical teams during emergency operations are exposed to several hazards. With the presence of airborne and liquid-borne pathogens, the chances of these personnel to becoming infected are high which makes it important that they be provided with the essential protective equipment. Other than equipment, training also plays an important role, to acquire safety training services, contact us at [email protected] or visit us at www.simplysafety.com.sg. Microsoft Cloud Recap of 2014

With another year to age for the cloud industry, 2014 provided essential developments which made some companies the leading revenue generators in the field. Number one cloud service provider is Amazon followed by Microsoft. Google has yet to release any data about their annual revenue and market leading for them to be omitted in the ranked list. Amazon Web Services are undeniably great and appeal to a lot more customers as compared to what other companies has to offer. Though, Microsoft created a huge transition from being one of the mid-revenue producers to being second on the top list. According to tech reviewers, this is mainly due to the fact that Microsoft has developed a lot of services and new technologies that appealed to the mass. In 2014, Microsoft is thought to have gained a total of $4 billion. This can be traced from the various SaaS, IaaS, and PaaS that have continually developed throughout the year. According to the report, the cloud increased their revenue by 128% compared to prior quarterly reports. The main cash producer is Office 365 which is a software linked to SharePoint, Exchange, and Lync servers. Microsoft Azure in the other hand is a separate service which is also producing fast-paced revenue but is still in continual development and software additions. It is the company's main contender to hybrid cloud infrastructures and services. The company notably released a series of additions to the platform namely Azure DocumentDB, Visual Studio Online, Azure Site Recovery, and many more. Generally, it is being described that the company is improving Azure at a frenetic pace. It is also noteworthy how Microsoft became considerate and submissive to the needs of the majority. In this year of 2014, one of their largest changes is the adoption of open source. Companies are looking for open source services since it allows personalization. Microsoft discretely adopted this idea by partnering with Docker and recently last month, Microsoft open-sourced the entire .Net Stack server-side. Operating system is a distant topic from cloud services but with the downfall of Windows 8 did create a few positive outputs. It opened up a portal for the integration between mobile and desktop for better compatibility of cloud services in any device. Microsoft has grown greatly throughout the years and a lot of organizations has started the transition. Though, a lot of companies are still capable of running their own cloud systems for better security.
