With another year to age for the cloud industry, 2014 provided essential developments which made some companies the leading revenue generators in the field. Number one cloud service provider is Amazon followed by Microsoft. Google has yet to release any data about their annual revenue and market leading for them to be omitted in the ranked list.
Amazon Web Services are undeniably great and appeal to a lot more customers as compared to what other companies has to offer. Though, Microsoft created a huge transition from being one of the mid-revenue producers to being second on the top list. According to tech reviewers, this is mainly due to the fact that Microsoft has developed a lot of services and new technologies that appealed to the mass.
In 2014, Microsoft is thought to have gained a total of $4 billion. This can be traced from the various SaaS, IaaS, and PaaS that have continually developed throughout the year. According to the report, the cloud increased their revenue by 128% compared to prior quarterly reports. The main cash producer is Office 365 which is a software linked to SharePoint, Exchange, and Lync servers.
Microsoft Azure in the other hand is a separate service which is also producing fast-paced revenue but is still in continual development and software additions. It is the company's main contender to hybrid cloud infrastructures and services. The company notably released a series of additions to the platform namely Azure DocumentDB, Visual Studio Online, Azure Site Recovery, and many more. Generally, it is being described that the company is improving Azure at a frenetic pace.
It is also noteworthy how Microsoft became considerate and submissive to the needs of the majority. In this year of 2014, one of their largest changes is the adoption of open source. Companies are looking for open source services since it allows personalization. Microsoft discretely adopted this idea by partnering with Docker and recently last month, Microsoft open-sourced the entire .Net Stack server-side.
Operating system is a distant topic from cloud services but with the downfall of Windows 8 did create a few positive outputs. It opened up a portal for the integration between mobile and desktop for better compatibility of cloud services in any device.
