An airline steward has been charged with drink-driving offences after a crash in Kuala Lumpur killed a road maintenance supervisor and injured another worker on 24 October

Mohd Iman Nafiz Fong Mohd Sabirin, 26, allegedly had a blood alcohol concentration of 64mg per 100ml, above Malaysia's legal limit of 50mg per 100ml.

He pleaded not guilty to both charges when he appeared before a magistrate's court on 26 October, the New Straits Times reported.

The crash happened in the early hours of 24 October as Mohd Iman was driving a Ford Focus Sport along the Sultan Iskandar Highway towards Jalan Parlimen.

Kuala Lumpur Traffic Enforcement and Investigation Department chief ACP Mohd Zamzuri Mohd Isa said the car lost control and struck two workers carrying out road maintenance in the left lane.

The impact killed a Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) supervisor, Faris Irfan Fazli, 29, while a 49-year-old lorry driver suffered injuries to his head and right hand.

The workers, including three Bangladeshi nationals, had been installing warning signs under a DBKL contract. Their shift began at 11pm on 23 October, reported Malay Mail.

Mohd Iman faces up to 15 years in jail if convicted

Mohd Iman faces one charge under Section 44(1)(b) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for driving under the influence of alcohol and causing death.

If convicted, he faces 10 to 15 years in prison, a fine of RM50,000 to RM100,000, and disqualification from holding a driving licence for at least 10 years.

The second charge, under Section 44(1A)(b), concerns causing injury while driving under the influence. It carries a prison term of seven to 10 years and a fine of RM30,000 to RM50,000 upon conviction.

However, he was released after the court granted him bail of RM35,000

Deputy public prosecutor Mohamad Fadhly Mohd Zamry sought RM50,000 bail for both charges and asked the court to suspend Mohd Iman's driving licence.

He also requested that the accused surrender his passport because he lives in Kuching, Sarawak.

Defence lawyer Mohd Anif Rafih sought a lower bail amount, arguing that his client needed his passport for his job with the airline. He proposed monthly police reporting as an alternative to surrendering it.

The court granted bail of RM35,000 with one surety, suspended his driving licence, and ordered him to report to a police station monthly.

The next case mention is scheduled for 30 November.
