Malaysian Border Control and Protection Agency (AKPS) director-general Datuk Seri Mohd Shuhaily Mohd Zain faces up to a year in prison for allegedly assaulting Special Branch police officers at KLIA Terminal 1

Shuhaily, 54, was charged with two counts of voluntarily causing hurt today, 21 October, reported the New Straits Times.

He pleaded not guilty at the Sepang Magistrates' Court to voluntarily causing hurt to Lance Corporals Muhammad Ekmal Sofwan Driman and Mohammad Faiz Muhamad Saman on 28 September.

The charges fall under Section 323 of the Penal Code. If convicted, Shuhaily faces up to one year in prison, a fine of up to RM2,000, or both for each charge.

Magistrate Khairatul Animah Jelani granted Shuhaily bail of RM3,000 with two sureties. The court fixed 25 November for case management.

Deputy public prosecutors Shahrizat Ismail and Sazali Omar appeared for the prosecution, while a team of eight lawyers led by Kitson Foong represented Shuhaily.

Shuhaily said he will let due process take its course

Before entering the courtroom, Shuhaily thanked those who had come to support him and those who had supported him from afar.

"I will let due process take its course. And this will be my last press conference on this case," he told reporters.

According to FMT, Shuhaily had claimed that certain quarters were attempting to tarnish his reputation and that of AKPS. He said he would cooperate with the investigation and accept whatever decision the authorities made.

The case follows the circulation of CCTV footage allegedly showing Shuhaily confronting a person at KLIA Terminal 1.

AKPS confirmed that the footage was genuine and said the incident occurred while Shuhaily was inspecting preparations at the airport ahead of the Bahrain Grand Prix in Malaysia.
