Over the weekend, I had the opportunity to attend Symphonic Ghibli, a sold-out concert series by the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra (MPO) celebrating the timeless music of Studio Ghibli

Returning for another year, the concert has become one of MPO's most anticipated programmes, with tickets selling out almost as soon as they go on sale.

As someone who grew up watching Studio Ghibli films, I knew hearing Joe Hisaishi's music performed live would make for a nostalgic evening. And oh, what a treat it was.

The orchestra performed suites from Kiki's Delivery Service, My Neighbour Totoro, Howl's Moving Castle, and Spirited Away, and I was transported back into Hayao Miyazaki's magical worlds

Even without scenes from the films on screen, the music vividly brought back moments like Chihiro working at the spirit bathhouse, Kiki soaring through the sky on her broomstick, and Mei meeting Totoro for the first time.

One of the biggest highlights for me was hearing Merry-Go-Round of Life from Howl's Moving Castle performed live. The sweeping melody gave me goosebumps, and for a moment, I genuinely felt like Sophie waltzing through the sky with Howl.

Led by MPO conductor Gerard Salonga, this year's programme featured complete orchestral suites rather than shortened arrangements from the films

In the programme notes, Salonga explained that these were performed exactly as Hisaishi intended, allowing audiences to experience the complete musical storytelling of his scores.

"The very fact that we have had successful concerts featuring the music – without the film – is a testament to the ability of Maestro Hisaishi's music to stand on its own," he said.

And, after attending the concert, I definitely agree.

Another thing I appreciated was how accessible the programme was for families with children and first-time concertgoers

One section introduced the different families of the orchestra, from the brass and woodwinds to the strings and percussion, hearing each instrument individually before they came together as one.

Meanwhile, the My Neighbour Totoro suite was narrated by Malaysian actress Nadia Aqilah, making it easy for children to follow the music.

The audience also added to the magic, with many arriving dressed as their favourite Ghibli characters. Even the musicians joined in, with a Totoro playing the oboe and a No-Face sitting among the cellists.
