One user pointed out that Khairul Aming, the founder of Sambal Nyet, also has more followers than Matty Healy.
A Malaysian Twitter user recently questioned the popularity of The 1975, after the British band's controversial performance at Good Vibes Festival 2023 caused the event to be cancelled
In the tweet, the user posted a screenshot comparing The 1975's Instagram followers to Malaysian content creator Ms Puiyi.
"The 1975 is not that popular. Our Ms Puiyi is more famous," they wrote.
At the time of writing, the tweet has garnered over 1.3 million views, and Malaysians showed support for Ms Puiyi in the comments section
"Ms Puiyi is Malaysia's national treasure," wrote one user.
"I'm proud to be from the same country as Ms Puiyi. She has the highest number of followers in Malaysia, but has never triggered anyone. She's just doing her own thing," wrote another.
The tweet also prompted netizens to compare both the band and its frontman Matty Healy's Instagram followers to other Malaysian content creators.
One user pointed out that Khairul Aming, the founder of Sambal Nyet, has 3.7 million followers, which is more than Matty Healy, who has 1.7 million followers on his personal profile.
To add to the mix, another user shared that celebrity entrepreneur Aliff Syukri also has more followers than both Matty Healy and The 1975.
On Saturday, 22 July, the second and third days of Good Vibes Festival 2023 were cancelled due to Matty Healy's controversial actions during the British band's set
On the first day of the festival, Healy performed while intoxicated on stage, proceeded to criticise the Malaysian government, and kissed the bassist of The 1975.
Following the incident, the organiser of Good Vibes Festival 2023, Future Sound Asia, was instructed by the government to cancel the remaining days of the festival.
Fahmi Fadzil, the Minister of Communications and Digital (KKD), also stated that as a result of Healy's actions, his ministry will tighten entry requirements for foreign artistes to hold concerts and performances in Malaysia.
