[VIDEO] 'Fast 9' Michelle Rodriguez & Justin Lin Get Candid About Sequels & Spin-Offs
It's been 20 years (and counting) since the first film of the franchise!
We recently got the chance to sit down for a chat with Michelle Rodriguez and Justin Lin of The Fast & Furious franchise
Rodriguez plays Letty in the franchise and Lin has directed five movies of the nine to date - the third, fourth, fifth, sixth, and ninth chapters.
20 years, nine films, one big family. For Lin and Rodriguez, being a part of the Fast franchise is both personal and a blessing
Justin Lin: "Every time we get to earn to make another one, I feel like, you know, that to me is very special and very personal. And to see that like, where we started and now that we have such a global community, it just means everything."
Michelle Rodriguez: "Very blessed. Super happy to be a part of a family that accepts you as you are, is kinda cool. And I get that kind of love all around the world."
Rodriguez shared her thoughts on an all-female Fast & Furious spin-off
Michelle Rodriguez: "I would love that without pandering. I feel like a lot of movies that do female-driven movies just because they want to satisfy a hole in the market, sacrifice storytelling in the process of doing that. And, you get really, really bad movies trying to follow a trend. I would hope that the studio would be thoughtful and careful when doing an all-female cast movie so that they don't fall into the trap and make a really bad movie."
With expectations getting higher and higher in each sequel, Lin let us in on his biggest challenge as a director
Justin Lin: "I think the challenge was to be able to tell that story in two and a half hours. I mean, I could've made this film for six hours because we now have so many characters and I love them all, and I wanted to spend more time."
Lin also mentioned that when he and Vin Diesel talked about wrapping up the saga, they didn't talk about it as one film but three beginning with Fast 9
Justin Lin: "When I came back and I talked to Vin. As we're kinda talking about the story and how we want to potentially wrap up the saga, we didn't talk about it as one film. We talked about three films and so, I think, Fast 9 is just the beginning of that journey."
Get ready to ride! Fast & Furious 9 is set to release on 24 June 2021.
