Videos of a food vendor in China selling 'durian strawberry rice' have gone viral beyond Chinese social media platforms, amusing netizens from Southeast Asia

The videos are believed to have first appeared on Douyin, China's TikTok equivalent, in mid-April.

In one of the videos posted by Yuwanya0, a food influencer with one million followers, the food vendor said a serving of the dish goes for 48 yuan (about RM31).

The dish is prepared by stir-frying durian pulps in hot oil with carrot, ginger, garlic, chilli, coriander, and scallion.

Surprisingly, the vendor adds strawberries to the wok, explaining that they serve as a side dish.

The seasonings used in the dish include MSG, sugar, and soy sauce. In a separate video, the vendor also added cumin to the dish.

"Did you invent this dish?" Yu asks, to which the vendor responds that his cousin in Guangxi taught him how to prepare it

"My cousin gave me [the recipe]. It's trade secret," the vendor says in jest.

When asked how many bowls he can sell in a day, the vendor replies five to six servings.

Verdict?

The food influencer says the 'durian strawberry rice' is delicious but does not suit her palate.

At the time of writing, the video has garnered over 134,000 likes and 59,000 comments

"I can't stop frowning while watching this," wrote a Douyin user.

"48 yuan? I don't want the rice. Just tabao the durian. Thank you," read a comment, while another added, "Stop stop stop! I pay you 48 yuan to stop adding [other ingredients]. Just tabao the durians and strawberries."

"[The vendor] has wasted not only strawberries but also durians," said a netizen.

Sin Chew Daily reported that Thai netizens commended the vendor's creativity and even expressed curiosity about how the dish would taste.

The vendor operates a Douyin account under the username Genius Yawen (天才亚文), where he frequently posts bizarre food combinations

On 26 April, he posted a video of himself cooking 'Oreo fried rice', and on 6 June, he created a dish called 'durian with pig intestine', where he stuffed durian pulp into a sausage.

Yawen described himself in his bio as a "Florida five-star celebrity chef, five-star street stall executive chef, and a postgraduate student in eight major cuisines".

That said, the 'durian strawberry rice' is likely meant to be a humorous experiment.
