A Malaysian shopper at a mall in Kuala Lumpur has surprised netizens after revealing in a fashion street interview video that his outfit cost a staggering RM900,000

In a video posted on Instagram yesterday, 17 July, fashion content creator Sam Wong is seen stopping two men at the mall and asking about the prices of their outfits.

One of the men then then lists out every item he is wearing and its prices:
– Bulgari necklace: RM13,000
– Dior T-shirt: RM5,000
– Bell & Ross watch: RM16,000
– Cartier ring: RM6,000
– Hermès bracelet: RM250,000
– Hermès bag: RM600,000
– ZARA pants: RM200
– Hermès sandals: RM8,000

The total cost adds up to RM898,200. The man said all prices are estimates.

During the interview, the man points out that he is wearing two different pairs of Hermès sandals, one in each colour, thus doubling the cost.

He also mentions that acquiring the Hermès bag was challenging because the client advisor required him to make additional purchases to be eligible to buy the bag.

Struck by the man's expensive outfit, Wong asks about his occupation and age

The man says he is a 22-year-old student who works in retail and runs his own business.

Wong also asks the man’s opinion on luxury clothing with large logos. He initially describes logo-centric outfits as "very show-off" but then backtracks, saying he prefers simpler designs.

Speaking to SAYS, Wong said that the video was neither staged nor pre-arranged with the man

"It was completely random. I was walking around [the mall] and noticed them wearing Hermès and Dior slippers, along with a Hermes handbag.

"I've produced many outfit videos and haven't seen many Malaysians dressed like that in KL, so I decided to approach them and ask about their outfit," he said when contacted, adding that the video was recorded on 25 June after a shoot with a brand at the mall.

Wong explained that he is selective about the people he interviews, only approaching ones he considers unique or fashionable.

At times, he might interview up to 20 people just to find a few good talents to feature in a 90-second video.

When asked about the negative comments the video received, mostly targeting the man interviewed, Wong said everyone has the freedom to spend their money however they like and wear whatever they desire

"Instead of criticising and trying to control how others see the world, we should respect their choices.

"Just because people can afford luxury products doesn't mean they're fake," he said.

Urging netizens to be courteous on the Internet, Wong said styles are subjective and evolve, adding that this is not the first time he has faced criticism over the authenticity of the items worn by his interviewees.

Wong added that he produces fashion and street interview videos to educate people on styling themselves and to share insights on how much people are willing to spend on clothing.

"I see this as an education, showcasing that Malaysians can dress well and have the financial means to invest in clothing," he said.

He also said his content aims to inform Malaysians about the variety of clothing brands available beyond those commonly found in the country.
