A Perak student was over the moon after learning that Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad bought fighting fish from him and his small online business

Twitter user @cheng_jiayung shared the unexpected news with his followers on Tuesday, 24 August, attaching photos and a video of Mahathir thanking him for the fish from his office in Langkawi.

Cheng told SAYS that he never expected the 96-year-old former prime minister to be a customer

Hailing from Ipoh, Cheng Jia Yung said he's a Form Five student who is helping his brother promote their new fish business online.

"I'm a promoter and my brother is the breeder. It's only been a bit over two months since we started this in June," he said.

It was a stroke of luck when he received a WhatsApp message on 14 August from someone who claimed to be buying six betta fishes for Mahathir, to which Cheng said he initially thought was a prank.

"I took it as a joke but completed his order anyway. After payment, he gave me the postal address and I became speechless," said the shocked seller.

In the video sent to the student by his aide, Mahathir thanked Cheng for breeding the fighting fish so successfully

"I believe this can become a big business because many people are interested in buying fighting fish and I wish you more success," said the happy-looking customer.

Mahathir's aide has also posted a photo on Twitter of the nonagenarian relaxing in his office with the "cute" fish on his table.

Cheng's post has been retweeted over 16,000 times, with netizens congratulating him and sharing his joy

"Wow, good luck in your business, Cheng! So happy for you!" exclaimed a Twitter user.
