A Thai monk went viral for scattering THB150,000 (RM20,000) from a crane during his birthday party at a temple in northeast Thailand on Tuesday, 28 March
According to a Facebook post by Thanakron Khamngram, Thai Buddist monk Luang Phor Kaen, hired a crane to hoist him up in a carriage and take to the skies, as he and a few other men made it rain bundles of cash and other goodies.
The money shower was to commemorate his 46th birthday and 24th year into monkhood.
The party took place at the Wat Suwannarat Phothiyaram Temple in Lamduan district, where his birthday party attendees, who are also his followers, are seen scurrying back and forth, frantically reaching out to grab the bank notes as they fell.
Luang Phor Kaen, who is also known as Phra Khru Phot Suwannarat, is famous for his charitable donations and Khmer language skills
According to Thaiger, Thai monks are not allowed to collect personal wealth, and are actually prohibited from accepting or owning money as it conflicts with their path to nirvana in the Theravada tradition.
However, according to a study done by Chulalongkorn University's Centre for Buddhism Studies, many monks nowadays, do not adhere to the rule, with many owning credit and debit cards.
Luang Phor Kaen's gesture of giving back to his disciples is seen as generous and creative.
Many Thai locals commended his actions, wishing him on his birthday
Many users also left supportive comments on the Facebook post, with one commenting, "I'm happy. Whoever that received a bundle from him is surely happy too."
There were several others who enjoyed watching the spectacle, wishing people the best of luck.
"Good luck, it's very fun," commented a user.
Countless other users showed their respect towards the monk by commenting, "Bless you" and "Amen" on the post.
